How to Save Tab Groups in Chrome (and When Not To)

Current Chrome saves tab groups automatically: a closed group is "saved in the bookmarks bar or in the menu", per Google's Chrome help. This guide is for anyone who reopens project tabs, and the one trap is that Delete group removes a group on every synced device, while Close group keeps it.

A group also stores live tabs, so a 4-tab morning group can hold 17 by Thursday. For a clean daily starting set, use a fixed list instead.

How do I save a tab group in Chrome?

There is no save toggle: the group saves as you work.

1. Right-click a tab and choose Add tab to group, then New group.
2. Type a specific name (Q4 report, not Work) and pick a color.
3. Drag more tabs in; right-click a tab and choose Remove from group to take one out.

For faster access, open Settings, then Appearance, and turn on Show saved tab groups, Show tab groups in bookmarks bar, or Automatically pin new tab groups to the bookmarks bar.

Edge and Brave use the same right-click Add tab to group menu. Edge also has Workspaces, which keep a whole project window.

Close group keeps it; Delete group removes it everywhere

Right-click the group name to see three options that behave very differently:

• Close group: closes the tabs, keeps the group. Reopen from More, then Tab groups, or the bookmarks bar.
• Delete group: removed "on your device and other devices that use the same Google Account", Google warns.
• Ungroup: tabs stay open, but the group is deleted on synced devices.

Groups sync when you are signed in and syncing history and tabs. In Edge, the switch is Workspaces and Tab Groups under Settings, then Profiles, then Sync.

A tab group keeps whatever is in it at close. Fixed lists keep only what you saved.

Worked scenario: a developer's standup set should be four tabs: sprint board, open PRs, CI dashboard and error tracker.

1. Open the four tabs, press Alt + S and type c link.
2. Choose Current Tabs, tick the four and save as standup. Duplicates are skipped.
3. In Properties, add the text shortcut standup or a hotkey like Alt + 3.
4. Each morning, type c, Space, standup in the address bar: the same four tabs open.
